ASTM A106 standard specifications

ASTM A106 is the standard specification for seamless carbon steel pipe applied for high temperature services.

Dimensions Schedule Range

The standard covers pipe sizes in NPS (National Standard Straight) from 10.3mm DN6 – 1219mm DN1200 (1/8 inch to 48 inch), complied with ASME B 36.10M. But other sizes out of this B36.10 also could apply the A106 standard.

Raw materials

ASTM A106 standard raw material is carbon steel, it shall be applicable for bending, flanging or similar forming processes.

Test Methods

The test methods for the ASTM A106 A, B, C are the flattening tests, hydrostatic test, nondestructive electric test, Ultrasonic test, eddy current test, flux leakage test, these test procedures shall be notified or discussed with client to confirm what kind of test will be applied.CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS ASTM A106 [ GRADE A,B,C ] IN % 

(1) For each reduction of 0.01% below the specified carbon maximum, an increase of 0.06% manganese above the specified maximum will be permitted up to a maximum of 1.35%.

(2)Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, for each reduction of 0.01% below the specified carbon maximum, an increase of 0.06% manganese above the specified maximum will be permitted up to a maximum of 1.65%.

(3) These five elements combined shall not exceed 1%. 

S355 is a non-alloy European standard (EN 10025-2) structural steel, most commonly used after S235 where more strength is needed. It got great weld ability and machinability, let us see more mechanical details of this steel.

The maximum carbon content that is allowed is highest in grade C which will end up resulting in higher mechanical properties due to that increased carbon content. With having higher mechanical properties, an engineer will be more interested in grade C when he or she is considering selecting pipe or materials for higher temperature services. Grade C has a carbon percentage that ranges around 0.35%. This shows why grade C is the strongest of the three and is used when dealing with the stronger projects. ASTM a106 Grade C is used in the toughest applications when transporting these gases and fluids from gas refineries, power plants, and on shipping vessels.

The maximum carbon content that is allowed is highest in grade C which will end up resulting in higher mechanical properties due to that increased carbon content. With having higher mechanical properties, an engineer will be more interested in grade C when he or she is considering selecting pipe or materials for higher temperature services. Grade C has a carbon percentage that ranges around 0.35%. This shows why grade C is the strongest of the three and is used when dealing with the stronger projects.
